What Foods Trigger Fibromyalgia Pain?

Processed foods

Many processed foods contain large amounts of salt, sugar and fat which can trigger food sensitivities and inflammation.

Processed foods often have a lot of additives such as Monosodium glutamate (MSG) and Aspartame that can worsen some symptoms of fibromyalgia.

Research has shown that fibromyalgia patients who stopped consuming MSG and aspartame experienced great reduction in painful symptoms. The symptoms returned when substances were reintroduced in their diets.

Alcohol

Excessive alcohol can interact adversely with medications prescribed for fibromyalgia.

In some research studies, low to moderate alcohol use helped to ease symptoms in some patients, while causing flare-ups in others.

Gluten

Gluten is the protein found in wheat, barley, rye, spelt, kamut and triticale among others. People who suffer from fibromyalgia also have certain food allergies or intolerances. For those who are allergic or intolerant to gluten, removing it can help with a variety of problems including inflammation and gastrointestinal issues.

In general, eating a healthier diet is thought to improve fibromyalgia symptoms. Going gluten free can help with this cause as it by default cuts out more unhealthy processed food while helping you to be mindful of what you put in your body.

Fried foods

Because vegetable oils often have inflammatory effects on the body, foods fried in these oils may worsen fibromyalgia symptoms. Avoiding foods containing unhealthy oils and fats such as cookies, doughnuts and other junk foods help to ease Fibromyalgia symptoms.
