What is Ketamine? How does it work?

Ketamine is a powerful, non-opioid medication known for its sedative, pain-relieving, and psychedelic properties. It is gaining recognition as a promising treatment for both pain and mood disorders.

Ketamine alleviates pain by targeting the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor, a crucial pain modulator in the nervous system. By blocking this receptor, ketamine infusions offer prolonged pain relief, which can reduce or even eliminate the need for opioids and other medications. Additionally, ketamine helps alleviate symptoms of depression associated with chronic pain and diminished function.

Who can benefit from Ketamine Infusion Therapy?

Ketamine infusion therapy is used to reduce or eliminate pain for patients diagnosed with conditions such as:

  • Widespread Pain
  • Cluster Headaches/Migraines
  • Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS)
  • Chronic Diabetic Neuropathy
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Depression
  • OCD/PTSD
  • Severe Anxiety

A Potential Solution When Other Treatments or Medications Fail

Ketamine infusion therapy can offer relief when traditional medications fall short. While not typically the first option for chronic pain and depression, it becomes a viable alternative when conventional treatments and medications fail to provide lasting relief. If you’ve tried other pain management therapies without success, ketamine infusions might be the breakthrough you need for long-term symptom and pain management.

Intravenous (IV) Lidocaine, a local anesthetic, has been a longstanding treatment for neuropathic pain, with renewed interest in its effectiveness. Similarly, IV Ketamine, a dissociative anesthetic used in general anesthesia, has shown promise in treating neuropathic pain and medically resistant depression. Studies indicate that both treatments are generally safe and effective for various conditions.

Understanding Neuropathic Pain

Neuropathic pain arises from damage to the peripheral or central nervous system. This type of pain can result from various conditions, including surgery, head trauma, stroke, spinal cord injury, neuropathy, and complex regional pain syndrome. Additionally, disorders like fibromyalgia can cause central nervous system hypersensitivity, leading to widespread pain.

Our Approach

We often combine lidocaine and ketamine to maximize benefits, though we may start with one agent depending on individual patient needs. Our goal is to provide effective pain relief tailored to each patient’s unique situation.
